Mornings with Matt

Did I mention my computer broke again? I sort of just gave up on it and was frustrated and didn't use it for weeks. Apparently it's working again.. In other news I took these photos one morning while we enjoyed some cinnamon rolls, watched movies, and looked at pictures of puggles. December was such a cozy month. Our home started taking shape (still a work in progress), we entertained our first guests, I finished up another semester of classes, and we enjoyed Christmas with our family. I can't wait to blog all the fun things that went on this month. Perhaps my 2012 resolution will be to blog once a week. I have plenty to share!

So it wasn't exactly spur of the moment. But it might as well have been. As I've mentioned about a zillion times, I work at a high school. The students had a canned food drive and raised well over their goal weight of food. So the staff received an email from the teacher in charge of the group that said "We exceeded our goal! Dye your hair pink!" Or something along those lines.

I have a feeling that no one else is going to do this.. There is mention of using temporary spray color. But I will more than likely the be only person with pink hair in the school. Isn't that exciting! I love it. I think one of my favorite feelings in the world is seeing myself in the mirror the first couple times after I get a really great hair color. It's like "Hey! I forgot how awesome this looks! Wow! I look great!" Alright, I swear I'm not that self absorbed, but I really love it.

There's my little back porch.. Can you see my spray paint on the cement? Oops. I painted my mailbox. I suppose it's worth mentioning that I wearing a thrifted dress, and necklace, leggings from Target, shoes from Payless, and a hat from.. Not really sure where it came from.. I have a lot things like that. Oh! and my dear friend Charity colored my hair :)

I've Missed You

First, I became so busy I had no social life.. All I did was sew. Then, my computer crashed (worst moment ever).. And while all that was happening I moved out of my parents and into an adorable little 2 bedroom with my boyfriend. So now that I've got a working computer, my floral print couch, and 12 mbps internet, I better dedicate myself to this blog.

Let's start with my first blog-time stealer, 35 students acting as Rapuzel, a couple of Princes, and lots of Merry folk.

It's things like this that make me realize although the choice to leave Iowa State filled me with guilt, it was worth it. I've made amazing friends, meet wonderful kids, and felt complete accomplished. I am learning skills I'd have never learned in college, and I would have never experienced had I not left. Some days I wonder what could have been, but looking back on this weekend, I realize I've got all that I need.

Your eyes do not deceive you. A couple weekends ago I joined my Mom and a couple of her friends to partake in a apple pie extravaganza. It was my Mom's church's fall festival, and they had been commissioned them to bake 8 pies. Well of course then everyone needed one to take one.. And then we made a few more. We also canned 18 jars of filling. It was a wonderful learning experience, but I am pied out.

Classic Shifty's

I mentioned before that my boyfriend, Matt, open a skate shop. Well just last week they changed locations, so these pictures are a little behind, but I still wanted to post them. They were sharing the space with a salon, but they've got their own space now. This has been quite the adventure for Matt. I am so proud of him for all the work he's done. I really hope things continue to work out and that someday he can expand and offer a space for music, but most of all a space that kids can come hangout and be safe. So here are some pictures of a typical day at Shifty's.

Baseball But Better

There are many great things about summer, but one of the best has got to be baseball. The Monday Night Burger Club got free tickets to a game early this summer. As usual it was a scorcher, but we enjoyed some brews, and Sye had several hot dogs. The Bucks killed it.. like home-runs in the first inning killed it. The evening was sponsored by our friends place of employment (exterminators), so throughout the night they were asking bug related questions. The final question was about lightning bugs.. I did not know they answer, but happened to be sitting with the lady that wrote the questions. She told me the answer, I went up to the table, and next thing I knew I was walking out with $20! Technically that means I got paid to watch baseball. Talk about awesome. Now that fall is here I am hoping we can all attend a couple football games.

Bean Dip

Shark Week played a show this summer during our town's summer celebration. It was the first show that they played their new song at. Bean Dip and Resin Hits.. My new personal favorite. It was ridiculously hot in the building and not much better outside, so between sets we went over to our favorite bar, The Cypress. We cooled off and enjoyed some beer, watching the carnies sell their glowsticks. After the show we wandered around Sturgis Falls. We heard this awesome Irish band play, who's name slips my mind. Jessica got her dance on with an old man while we paid too much for beer. No surprise there. This was by far one of my favorite nights of the summer.

Summer is fun, but fall is better for picture taking.

A long, long, time ago.. We went out to Sakura, the hibachi grill. I have never been a big fan of the hibachi cooked food. However, It's always fun to watch!

Today I am going to the local skate competition. I have a feeling it is going to be a blast. Keeping our fingers crossed that a lot of kids will show up, Shifty's will get some new business, and everyone will go home happy!

The Somewhat True Tale of How Busy I Am

It seems I have managed to work myself into being the most busiest I have ever been in my whole life. I mean, of course, I've had busy weeks.. But this is busy life.. Like I might as well start driving a van, or drink coffee on a daily basis, or get a pixie cut, busy.

I am working 2 different secretary jobs at work, babysitting, taking 3 classes, and now.. Helping with the fall play at the high school I work at. And by helping I mean designing all the costumes, hair, and make-up, as well the usual assistant director stuff.

We will be putting on "The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood" as well as another undecided One Act. Did I mention practice starts on Tuesday? The play is right before Thanksgiving so we have a lot of work to do.

I have to admit I am really excited about this new obligation, but also slightly intimidated. I have never been "in-charge" of something like this. Yes, it all has to be approved by the director, but ultimately the things I've been put in charge of will be my ideas. And the guys I'm working with actually RESPECT them! It's so amazingly gratifying to suggest an idea to people who know way more than you do about theater, and have them LOVE it.

So here is some of my inspiration pictures for the costumes. I will hopefully keep up with the blog a little better now that I've got something I find exciting to talk about. I am planning on posting pictures of all the costumes I make!

I love the posters from the 1938 movie with Errol Flynn and Oliva de Havilland. The bright use of color is something I definitely want to do. We work on a very small stage so I think it's important to the most important characters really POP!

If I can find cheap velvet Marian will be wearing it. I will also be hunting for cheap, tulle, taffeta, lace, and anything with texture that can be layered, to use for the Fawning Ladies.

I will probably make all the guys tunics. Ryan, my co-director, thinks all the Merry Men should wear tights. I couldn't agree more. Although the boys probably won't like wearing dresses and tights, it's cheap, and easy. I can add embellishments like cords, collars, and studs to make them look more "manly".

I love the costume on the girl pictured above. She is playing the "Townsgirl", basically the narrator. I've come up with a fun idea for that character, but will be saving that secret for the show. Anyway, I love that she's wearing plaid. This is only the somewhat true story, so why can't they wear plaid? I always see cheap.cheap.cheap plaid prints at the fabric store so it's definitely a possibility.

Anyway, if you have any tips on how to mass produce clothes, or Robin Hood inspiration, let me know!

After the Storm

I love summer storms. The thunder, lightening, puddles.. for some reason all feel different in the summer. I can remember when I was little, piling all my stuffed animals on my bed, and preparing for the 'flood' that would take me down the street. Now I just like to pile myself on my bed and listen.

This storm offered my planets a nice drink. Pictured are beans, pepper leaves, basil, and tomatoes. Most of them are gone now, except the tomatoes, and couple tiny peppers. The basil has gone to seed and is far too strong. I tried some with a tomato the other day and had to spit it out. Yuck!

The honeysuckles looked especially rain-forresty. When I was taking these pictures there were wasps flying all over. I was too scared to get close enough to get a good picture of them.

I can feel summer coming to an end. It makes me nervous, and also excited. I love fall, but what girl who loves clothes, doesn't? However, I feel like I didn't get in enough swimsuit wearing, or ice cream dates. Matt reminded me that I jumped off a 60+ foot cliff this summer, so I should not feel I lacked in summer adventures. Hopefully fall will feel a bit more productive.

I have 4 folders of pictures that I need to make blog posts for.. but I'm busy. Doing what you ask? Well I unexpectedly received a call last Thursday to go back to work. One of my favorite coworkers found a better job, so they needed me to come fill his spot. Friday I started my (fingers extremely tightly crossed) new job. I was the attendance secretary, but I will hopefully now be one of the main office secretaries. Better pay, less angry parents. Unfortunately they can't just give me the job, I have to 'apply'.

Summer is now officially over, which means Sunday is Sunday again.. And not Friday night round 2. So tonight Matt is over here, playing video games. I am painting flowers on my toes to match my fingers nails.

So if I find myself some time this week I will be back with our adventures in Des Moines a couple weeks ago. As well as some long lost photos from June.

Did you know Iowa is hot? Like really hot. It is also really humid.. Like 90% humidity. So basically when you walk outside it feels like it's raining, raining sweat. And when there is a breeze, it's like an old man breathing in your face. So of course my camera, which has been enjoying the air conditioner, immediately becomes a fog machine.

I forget how awkward it is to take pictures of myself. I could hear the neighbor boys, I think they 13 and 15, playing on the other side of the treeline. I was hoping they wouldn't hear my grumbling about my foggy camera, or my dying battery in my remote. I could clearly use some practice hiding that little thing.

Hungover Hannah Goes Shopping

I had a little too much fun last night, which lead to a headache and a couple hours in bed. For reason this lead to online shopping? I can honestly say that I rarely spend more $20 on any clothes, shoes, or housewares. Furniture, okay fine, I can give in to that. But anything else, whoa buddy, I could get that cheaper! Today was no exception, but I actually bought NEW things today. I haven't done that in a couple months. Since I haven't blogged in a bit I thought I'd share my steals.

Kaylah over at The Dainty Squid mentioned that Happy Socks was having a 70% off Summer Sale. So for the lowlow price of $14.50, including shipping, I snagged a pair of tights, and a pair of tubes. Pictures from Happy Socks

I also snagged 2 pairs of Fioni Billy Joe Jazz Oxfords from Payless. With my coupon I found online, and having them shipped to the store, I paid $32.75! I have to have close-toed shoes at work. It's slightly a bummer, and difficult to find something other than flats. I haven't seen these shoes in real life, but I am hoping I can make them look professional. Pictures from Payless

I have huge feet, like women's size 11 feet, so it can be really hard for me to find cute shoes. I really LOVE shoes, but don't have nearly as many as I'd like. I image if I had size 7 feet I'd have to have a whole other closet, lined with shelves, to hold them all. Photo from The Coveteur

I can't get over this little girl. She is my cousin Jenna's daughter, Petra. She is five years old, her favorite color is pink, and she loves unicorns. Can you get anymore awesome? So I apologize for photo overload on this post, and my previous ones. I just don't have much to say, but take lots of pictures.

One afternoon the two of us stayed home and played in my room. I love that little kids are often so impressed by another person's bedroom. Petra kept asking over and over, "Can we play in your room?!"

After playing Wii for a couple hours Petra emerged from my room in this fancy get-up. She is basically a mini Mary-Kate Olsen... She even model walks. Later that evening Matt came over they watched skate videos together. That's right, Petra wants to be a skater girl.

Petra also really loves strawberry waffles, with whip cream. I tried to overload her waffle with it, but her Mom quickly stopped me. Mom's are just no fun. However she has promised me that when Petra is older, she can come stay with me for a week, or the whole summer. We'll cover that waffle with whip cream then... Muhaha!

I miss this little girl so much. I refuse to wait another five years to see her again!

In 1845 William Sturgis settled in the town of Sturgis Falls. In 1850 the name was changed to Cedar Falls. In 1976 the bicentenial celebration was so named Sturgis Falls. Every year oodles of people gather in Cedar Falls to enjoy food, music, crafts, a parade, and various other fun things. The second to last weekend in June has ALWAYS been my favorite time of year.

Being that there is lots to do during Sturgis Falls it is a great time to have family come to visit. On Saturday morning we went to the parade. There were cute old ladies playing cymbals. A convoy of at least 20 Harley's (which my Dad despises).

There are really long bicycles that make giant circles around the floats.. They also boast pancake breakfast! There are more loud vehicles.. Did I mention my Dad really hates them? Can't forget everyone's favorite, The Pork Queen.

Unfortunately the Shriners now ride on a float. There used to be lots more men, wearing spray painted gold shoes, and they even used to paint their faces tan. It was a sight. But it seems they have become a bit more politically correct, and old. This year I saw my future job, sparkly lady riding a sparkly horse. Can't forget about the giant bowling pin, which Nigel thought was HILARIOUS. He was laughing so hard he was crying.

On Sunday we went to see the Blue Band play. Just incase anyone didn't know, I have a huge creepy crush on Bob Dorr. He is the singer in the Blue Band, and he also has a radio show on our local station. He has the deepest voice ever.. Sexy.. Just Sayin'.

He came right up to me playing his harmonica. We clearly have a love connection. Check out my Dad's expression, "Exuuuse me".

Darlin' Don't You Go And Cut Your Hair

Whoops, we did it! Thursday Matt spontaneously asked Charity (the girl who owns the salon shared with the skateshop) to cut his hair. He was all "Just make it an inch and a half all around." Ha! Boys. He also kept saying he wanted it all the same size. Guys getting hair cuts is hilarious.

He really wasn't very excited. I think Matt genuinely wanted to keep his hair but the 105 heat index just got too him. (( I also think it was my secret whispers of 'please cut it, and no mullet or rattail' ))

I LOVE IT!

So Matt was a total inspiration. I have been on the fence for months about cutting my hair off. Remember my post about bangs? I still hadn't cut them yet. So I decided if Matt could do it, so could I.

I was a wee bit nervous. But I saw this cut on the cover of one of Charity's hair books.. It was perfect. It is the cut on the upper right hand corner in the last picture. So I did it! 8 inches, GONE.

I couldn't be happier. Thank you much Charity!

My Dad recently built a sailboat. It took him almost 4 years, but it's finally done! He only sailed a couple times before deciding to build a sailboat so he is still learning. My cousin's husband, Nigel, is a rather experienced sailor.

While they were here my Dad and Nigel took the boat out to a local lake. Nigel showed my Dad a few tricks, and Petra even got to go out for a ride.

As you probably know, my family is visiting from Los Angeles (and Seattle). It has been at least 5 years since I have seen them. As almost all of them are originally from Iowa, and in fact lived on a farm, we always make an effort to go out to "The Farm". This time was a slightly more significant as this is Petra's (my cousin's daughter) first trip to Iowa. The Farm was were my Dad and Aunt grew up, where my cousin spent a large amount of her childhood, and where my brother spent the first couple years of his life.

Both of my parents have amazing siblings. When they are with them they always seem so much more relaxed. Of course I've heard many stories from my Dad about The Farm, but my Aunt Mary brings a whole new perspective, and lots of new stories.

Above is the row of trees where.. well a couple dogs are buried. As well as where the chicken coupe used to be. Below the, now fallen, mulberry tree.

Sye, Petra, and I ventured out to where the house used to be. The grass was as tall, and some taller, than Petra. Although the house is no longer, it is now a wooden platform that covers the well. It's so strange to think that this space of land is the location of some of my favorite stories. I can only imagine what it would have been like to live out here.

I cannot remember a time when The Farm had buildings. It used to have a house, a large barn, a chicken coupe, and a couple other buildings. There isn't much left to it anymore, but visiting always brings up great stories and memories.

On a totally unrelated note, has anyone noticed the change in photo color when you upload directly to blogger? I am really starting to consider just uploading to Flickr.

Sidewalk Sales

Every summer most of the shops on Main Street have sidewalk sales. I didn't spend more than $15 on everything I bought I today! Not to mention I got to spend the afternoon with my favorite lady, my Mom.

Naturally, when I see a suitcase I almost immediately think it needs to come home with me. I have way too many suitcases, but I swear, they are all in use. So what to do with this little guy? Then, ah ha! A camera case. The one I have right now is just an ugly black one. It keeps my camera safe, but doesn't look cute on my shoulder. So after the family leaves next week I am going to stuff and fluff this suitcase into the safest, and cutest, camera bag.

I also bought a bunch of these beautiful fabric dyes and paints. Less than 75 cents a piece! I don't know exactly what I will use them on but I'm thinking giant flowers.

I also found this gorgeous Art Deco magazine holder. Perfect for all my Rachel Ray Magazines. Which, to this day, I have no idea who bought me a subscription to.

And lastly, while taking pictures of my new finds, this little guy appeared! We are pretty sure he's on his way to be a Robin. He just sat there for at least 5 minutes letting me take his picture. I was less that 5 feet away. I even jokingly said to my Mom that he was being a great model, and he starts turning his head and posing. What an awesome birdie!

Ohh Avril..

Summer is officially in full swing. As the girlfriend of an avid skateboard I find myself sitting at the skatepark quite a bit. So what do you do while sitting at a skatepark? Well as there are rarely other girls there to talk to ( and who talks to guys? ;] ), I mostly read books, play Crafting Mama, and take LOTS of pictures. In the last week I have spent even more time at the skatepark taking pictures for the Cedar Falls Skatepark Clean-Up.

We spent last weekend sanding, cleaning, and painting the park. It was a great time and the park looks really nice. I painted the Iowa ramp. It's not really what I had originally designed, except the outline of iowa and the corn, oh well.Yesterday I painted the sign dedicating the park to two skateboards that passed away last summer, Dino and Jade. Dino was very close with Matt, and I went to junior high and high school with Jade. Losing friends is never easy, but dedicating the park to them both was truly heartwarming. Everyone was behind naming the park after them, and it really showed how strong the skating community is. Although I'm not skateboarder I spend a lot of them around them. I think they often get a bad rap but they are some of the nicest people I know.

A little less than a month ago Matt and his friend Shane opened a skateboard shop, Shifty's. So far it has been pretty successful. They share a space with a hair salon.. Yah, skaters and hair? Pretty great. Charity is the owner of the salon, Snipz. We went to high school together, and I've always thought she was awesome so I've really enjoyed getting to hangout around her again.

Where I blog! Feels great to hangout in a space that is more my style. Getting a little tired of my powder puff blue room. But that will be all the more inspiration for when I can finally afford my own place.

So here are the pictures I took the night before last. After almost 2 year I am finally getting the hang of my camera. I used to just shoot on auto but lately I've been shooting only on manual. It's a lot more fun! As long as you are taking pictures of something you will be disappointed about if they don't turn out.

Where have you been spending your time this summer? It's been a bit chilly the last week so I haven't been able to go to the beach every day as I had hoped. Next week my family from California is coming. I haven't seen them in over 6 years! I've never even met my cousin's daughter, Petra. I am beyond excited. My bother is coming as well!

Growin' Green - Part 2

LOOK! A Garden (and my garden guru) The only thing edible right now is the leafy veggies; arugula, spinach, buttercrunch. However, little flowers are blooming on the tomato plants, meaning the fruit can't be too far behind!

Carrots!

Herbs! Basil, Italian Cilantro, and Parsley.. Potted herbs are a requirement in my life.

Thanks to my Dad and Mom for all the help they've done with the garden. When more of the plants start producing I will take some foodie photos, and maybe even post a couple recipes. I might actually get around to a good pickling post! Dill pickles are one of my favorite foods. Last year when we made some they didn't turn out as crunchy as I had hoped.. So we'll have to try again!

A Little Birthday

This past Wednesday was Matt's birthday. Celebrations are always a bit stressful on me, I'm sort of a planning control freak. But something monumental happened on Tuesday (which will be in my next post), so I decided to just let it ride, and I'm so glad I did! We had a blast, and most importantly Matt had a great time.

Love those last 3 pictures. See all that food! It's called a Garbage Can Lid, from Famous Daves. It feeds 4-6 people, and it's delicious!

For Matt's birthday I gave him a bicycle. It's a 1970 Schwinn Collegiate; 3 speed, 1 hand brake, and coaster brakes. I need to take a picture of it, but we haven't gotten a chance to go for a ride since his birthday.

It looks JUST like this. It's so beautiful, and the same color as his car.

Matt's birthday consisted of hanging out at the shop (just realized I haven't done a post on that either!) and playing Zelda. Dinner with the Monday night group. Visiting his family, and watching the end of True Grit. Going for a quick bike ride around the neighborhood. Hanging out on Main, and then heading to our favorite bar, Hoochies. I chose not to take my camera to the bars, just like on my birthday, because you just never knew what might happen to it. But I just got a little Polaroid point and shoot! All I need is new batteries, and a cord for the computer. Once I get that up and running I will be taking that out at night.

Bang-O-Rama

I think the most frequently asked hair related question is "Should I get bangs?". Well I have bangs. I've had bangs forever. I haven't not had bangs for the last 10 years.

That was a little frightening. See my straw hair? Worst idea ever. I might have looked cute for like.. A day. I pretended to blame my mother for not letting me bleach it totally platinum (Thanks Mom!) Which would have been an even worse idea. But I think the fact of the matter is I am not beautifully milky toned like my dear friend Nic. Nor am I a totally tan beach babe (I don't have any friends like that).

Here I am now with my red hair and straight across bangs. So what's my problem? I can't decide if I want to keep my straight across, make my forehead sweaty, always flip on the side bangs. Or if I want to let them grow out a bit (they've probably gone out enough now) and get some angled bangs.. What I like to call a swoop. I am a bang person. I'd love to be like Anna and just be able to not have bangs. She is rockin' some Alexa Chung inspired hair right now. You should really go check out her blog and see. So what do I do? Currently I'm pretending I don't have this problem by hiding them. Under head bangs, with bobby pins, or recently.. in pin curls.

So what do you think? Grow them out? Chop them straight again? Angle them?

Today is a very special day for a very special person but I'll be back with that post tomorrow!

You're the Sweetest Girl This Side of Heaven

Gracie and I have been girl talking for over a year and a half now. That's a lot of girl talks. Out of all the people I know, she is by far the sweetest. So when I stopped by her house yesterday to pick up a book, I wasn't surprised when she said she had a present for me. Probably once a month Gracie has a present for me. Usually clothes, and you all know how I love clothes. Well this time she outdid herself..

Look at that sweet little care package! And those muffins, best homemade muffins ever.

Growing Green

My Dad and I are planting, or have planted, a garden! We've got all the classic veggies, as well a couple interesting (nasty) things. We also have pots with herbs in them, which besides tomatoes is what I'm looking forward too the most. This garden is supposed to be my learning experience so that next year I can hopefully plant my own. Here are a couple pictures from the very first steps. When the veggies sprout up a little higher I will take pictures of them. Right now they just look like little weeds all in a row.

Just a thought, but aren't bugs supposed to be outside. Seriously, get me out of this basement. I guess I can no longer have food, or drinks, down here. I almost had a heartattack when I saw this thing.. I have creepy crawly feelings all over right now just typing this. Ew.eeweweweweweewew.

I apologize if you're feeling creepy crawly now too.

Meemorial Weekend

Happy Meemorial Weekend! Why Meemorial? Just a funny family joke. I hung out with my Dad all day on Saturday. We saw the new Pirates movie, and then I made us some homemade pizza. We drank a bottle of wine, enjoyed our back porch, and talked about the travels we've been on (Italy and Africa). It was a wonderful evening. The rest of my weekend was spent with my lovely boyfriend.

So here's to remembering all our loved-ones! And appreciating all the sacrifices made for us.

Basement Life

Well I've officially been a "I live in my parent's basement" adult for 6 months. I know I've mentioned it on the blog before, so I won't talk to much about it. I'm so appreciative that I have parents that will let me stay with them until the time is right for Matt and I to move in together. However, creatively, it's awful. I've also got this love affair with stuff, and well, when you live in one bedroom, you quickly run out of space for your beloved things. So I've a storage unit fill with tables and chairs and all the other nicknacks I had before I moved in. In my Dad's shop I have a aqua filing cabinet that I got from my friend Mike. A recently found 1970's velour floral print couch (Match made in heaven, we are). Various other furniture and trinkets, like the amazing 1960's Fisher Price toys my Mom bought me for my birthday, and my fawns. But the one (eight) things I'm most sad about having hidden away is my suitcase collection. They are all so beautiful, and can be very useful, but there just isn't room to have them displayed. It seems sort of silly, but I feel like my stuff is sad, like the toys from Toy Story, that I have to hid them all away. So for now I'll just have to keep showing you all my finds here, at least they can have a moment in the light (which is awful down here).

Did I tell you about my doilies?! Oh well they are ridiculously expensive, like 3 dollars for a damn doily. Are you serious!? A couple weekends ago I discovered a whole box of doilies at a garage sale. The women sold me the whole box, for 5 DOLLARS! Someday in the very distant future you will see all these doilies put to use on one very special day.

Commitment Issues

As you can tell by my lack of posts I have serious commitment issues with this blog. In last couple days I have been told by several people that they read my blog (comment you secret readers!). So in light of all the "I L0VE your blog!"'s I am going to try and be a little more committed.

To start I will show you some pictures from birthday. I finally turned 21 a couple weeks ago, being one of the two under-agers in my group of friends I was very much ready for it.

We started the night at Steamboat Gardens, where a couple of us go every Monday. My parents joined us, which I loved, and my Mom made me cupcakes. After dinner we went to the Trailer to enjoy each other's company before we headed out to spend oodles of money at the bar. Of course Matt decided he needed to climb up on the roof, and so we all did. I still have a scab on my elbow (and knee, and ankle).. Smooth move. I'm glad we did it though because it was the official last time everyone was on the roof. Blake and Gracie moved into their new house yesterday and so was the end of an era. Anyway, we then headed downtown, I opted to not bring my camera, which was a good choice. As you'd image the evening ended in typical 21st birthday style. I'll spare you the juicy, barf-y, details.. You're welcome.

If you've been reading my blog recently you can see I got my shoes! I was so so so excited. My trickster Mom put them in a different box so I'd think I hadn't got them. She totally had me fooled.

It was one of the most fun, and unforgettable birthday's I've ever had. I have such wonderfully awesome friends! As well as extremely loving parents, and the most caring boyfriend. Thank you all for an amazing birthday!

The Polaroids - Vol. 2

Turns out two pictures a day is a lot of pictures! So I just picked my favorites.

My new bonfire requirement is wine. I always felt like I had to drink beer but I enjoy wine much more. So when I turn 21 in.. ohh.. 6 days!!! I will be buying delicious wine for our bonfires this summer. Next up, my Easter basket. Pretty freakin' awesome! My Mom rules. My new adorable swimsuit from Goodwill, and my booty. Half-Moon manicure! Newton's cafe, LOOKS like the cutest diner ever. Unfortunately it was CLOSED when Matt and I tried to go for dinner. BUMMER. My first black pearl on Hexic!!!! My bouquet of flowers from Matt for Secretaries day, so sweet and beautiful. Church, which I've been trying to attend more. However this particular church might not be for me, so I've got my eye out for the perfect one. The best fingernail polish remover ever. The show on Friday, at the end there was pretty much no one there. My usual view; twitter, TV, a billion blankets. Lastly, one of my favorite places to enjoy the sun, at the skatepark watching Matt.

So there's my week! Did I mention my birthday is in less than a week? Holy crap! I'm excited. I have no clue what to wear though. My Mom's church is having a MASSIVE 'garage sale' this weekend. I might be getting to go the night before it opens, so keep your fingers crossed for me. Maybe I will find my birthday dress there (( Talk about perfect birthday gift )).

Welcome to my new weekly feature! If you follow me on twitter you already know, I got a new phone! It's just the new Black Berry Curve but I love it! My goal is to take at least two pictures a day. Just to document my daily life. I didn't do too hot this week, but I'm workin' on it. Here are a few photos from this week as well a few from when I first got the phone. I decided to use these little Polaroid frames from Picnic. I also use the 1960's effect.

The first two are photos from a couple weeks ago. My friend Audrey just got a job as a bartender at the Lava Lounge and Beer Hall. Two really cool place to hang out, and they happen to be connected to an amazing mexican restaurant, Rudy's. Next, a picture of Matt at band practice. My bonsai tree, and it's new friends on my desk. A typically ride in the back of Matt's car. My beautiful new thermos! Lastly, my storage unit. Yeah, I have a lot of stuff.. which I miss, A L O T.

Shark Week entertained us with a little music on Thursday night. I really shouldn't stay up late on week nights but this was certainly worth it. They have another show coming up on the 29th, and one at the beginning of May. You should gooo.

Sometimes I forget how hilarious my friends are until I see them frozen in a picture.

I love weekends now that I have zero commitments. No homework, no work, just relaxing. I may be taking a little too much advantage of these days, as I have done almost nothing today. I might be more motivated to do something if most of friends and boyfriend didn't work on Saturdays and Sundays. But I just really can't help but enjoy doing nothing! I think tomorrow my Dad and I are going to see Hanna, does that count as being productive? Maybe I'll clean my room...

Keeping this to a paragraph or two. All these changes in my life over the last couple months put my brain on maximum whacko. Not that I wasn't totally crazy before, but I'm totally even more crazy now. I had no idea it was possible, but it is. With that being said, it's time for a change, something for me to be proud of! I became an official student of Red Velvet's Dream Job e-course today. This summer, during my vacation HA!, I will be opening an Etsy shop.

Full-Time

First and foremost while uploading these photos Blogger informed me I've used all my 'free storage'. Sayy whattt!? Not cool. Guess I'll be hoppin' on Flickr train.

Now that I've got myself a full-time job, my schedule has been very different. I'm still getting used to it, so of course it's been causing me a bit of stress. I'm just ready for things to settle down, and be 'normal'. But until then I will just have to take a deep breath and take it one day at a time. I'm so appreciative of all the people in my life who bring me joy daily.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

I'm not jobless! I am now an Attendance Secretary at a local high school. It's pretty fun thus far, I've only been there 3 days though so I still have to feel it out a bit.

Today when I got off work I got my second tattoo. It's a big pink bow on my left thigh. I'm absolutely in love with it but, boy did it hurt! On Thursday I donated plasma to make some extra cash to pay for it. I think with all these needles, and waking up early, I'm feeling really worn out!

Sometimes when you go (put yourself) through challenges, life gives you little reminders that it's all worth it. There are days where I have to take a deep breath and try REALLY hard to remind myself of that. However, tonight when I got home, someone else did the reminding.

Carly was hosting a giveaway over on her blog from Amy of A is for Ampersand. Guess who won? Me! It was the perfect little pick-me-up! So thank you so much to both Carly and Amy, as well as True Random Number Generator (I couldn't have done it without you)!

I will blog about my shiny, and swollen tattoo sometime tomorrow.

When Life Gives You Lemons

Make Lemon Squares of course! Or even better make lemon cupcakes!

When I was little my favorite treat my Grammie made was lemon squares. Every time we'd go visit her or she'd come visit us I'd ask her to make them. It was my Mom's birthday last week (Happy Birthday Mom!), and she also loves lemons squares so I thought I'd make something a little special for her.

It's a very simple recipe that doesn't take hardly any time to make. Normally you would use a 9x13 pan but I used a regular size cupcake pan. The recipe only makes a dozen, regular size, cupcakes. However if you made them smaller you could make 2 dozen.

You need: Lemon cake mix (with pudding! which is already in the mix if you're curious). 2 eggs. 1/3 cup of oil. 1 8oz package of cream cheese. 1/3 cup of sugar. 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

Preheat the oven to 350, and prepare your cupcake tins or pan. Mix cake mix, 1 egg, and oil until crumbly. If making cupcakes, fill your tins half full. Otherwise save 1 cup of mix and spread the rest in the pan. Bake for 15 minutes at 350, or until crust turns golden brown.

While your crust is baking mix cream cheese, the other egg, sugar, and lemon juice. I use a mixer, but the little lumps of cream cheese almost never disappear. (( I didn't get a picture of this, oops! ))

When your crust is finished baking you can allow it cool. I personally am far too impatient to ever allow anything to cool. There never seems to be a difference between mine and Grammie's and she always lets it cool, so I think that's a big myth and waste of time. Evenly spread your cream cheese mix over the top of your crust. Use your saved crumbly mix and sprinkle it over the top.

Back in the oven it goes! Bake for another 15-17 minutes, or again, until the crust is golden brown.

Tada! Yum, yum, yum!

It's True Love

Coming up with a title for this post took me a couple minutes. I thought there must be a pun related to wedges, but I couldn't think of it. So I went with how I really feel. Anna has always told me that she loves this pair of shoes, or that pair of shoes, and she can't live without them. I didn't get it at first. How can you love shoes so much? But then... I've only had shoe love one other time, it was for the Dolce Vita for Target ankle boots. But I've fallen, hard, again for Lela Rose for Payless Bolivar Wedge.

Seriously!? They don't sell them in the store. I wanted to go put them on and just strut around the isle in them. Even take a couple pictures for the blog. I was more than disappointed to not find them. No dress up? No "See how good they look? I need them!"? (( This being said to either my Mom or Matt, as my birthday is a little over a month away. ))

The problem? Their price-tag. I'm cheap. I feel guilty about spending more than $20 on anything and that is a 'splurge'. Most of the shoes I own I received as presents. All but about 2 pairs of them (which have been with me for years) are from Target or Payless and didn't cost more than $30. So how can I convince myself to cough up $50 on shoes?!

OH and did I mention I'm still jobless. Yep! 2 words .. Affirmative Action. I won't know for sure until Wednesday (I was told I'd start this past Monday). So if you pray, or cross fingers, or send positive vibes, I could use them.

Well I'm off to make a cast iron, deep dish, pizza. I saw the recipe on Emma's blog and had to bake one, it looked amazing!

Golden Bambi

You know when you come across an item while thrifting (or shopping) and you think "I need this!! Shit, it's way over my budget. Shit, I really need it."? Well those were my exact thoughts, and perhaps words, while I was out yesterday with Anna. I saw these two little fawns and fell in love. I wasn't thrilled at the price written on the bottom of these babies, but I went for it. Boy, I'm sure glad I did.

I was cleaning up a couple other items I've bought over the last few weeks when I thought I might try cleaning the fawns. I asked my Dad what kind of metal he thought they were, and he guessed bronze. He said I'd have to go out and buy bronze cleaner. Uh, no.. That's not fast enough. I need to clean them now! So he suggest I try the copper cleaner we used on our old copper bottom pans. The first picture is my test spot, I was thrilled that it worked so well!

Here they are looking a bit dull, and very tarnished.

Look at them now! They are so shinny you can see yourself in them. I can not wait to put them in my own home. But for now they've found a home in my parents living room.

Spring is in the Air

Yesterday was such a beautiful day. I spent some time outside, both watching Matt skateboard and taking a few outfit photos. The car in these pictures in the guitarist's in Matt's band, Jeremy's. I think it was his car when he was 16 or 17. I've take photos with it and of it several times. I love the color, and the headlights.

Just a quick update; I quit my job at Red Lobster on Monday. Yesterday I turned in an application to be a secretary at a high school in the city right next to mine. My mom used to work for the school district, called the principal, and BAM! I am now off to sign papers, and looking very professional while doing so. I start on Monday! I can't believe I got the job. I am so excited to work 7-3 Monday-Friday, have full benefits, and weekends off. I have been so ready for a more 'adult' job, that I might be able to do for a while. If this all goes as planned I am hoping to get my degree at the end of the year.. Perhaps in Administration?

America's Pastime

If I didn't already mention this we are in Florida to watch Matt's brother, Andrew, play baseball. He plays for Northern State University, which is in South Dakota. Unfortunately he is hurt right now and can't play. But there are a few photos of his team.

I may, or may not, be updating this post a couple times with more baseball photos. It's not very exciting to take pictures of people you don't know. However, the games get kind of long, and it is something to do. It would also help to improve my photography skills. Maybe next time I will move out from behind the net.

Vacation Time!

Remember New Years Day when Matt's parents invited me to join them in Florida. We have finally arrived! After being smushed in the middle seat, in the back of a truck, for 15+ hours I am ready to relax (and stretch).

Here are some photos of our fancy townhouse. I have my own room, and bathroom.

The resort we are staying at has a bunch of pools, a lazy river, and a slide. Today Matt, his sister, and I are all staying back at the hotel to go swimming. The sky is looking a little gray, but the sun is starting to peak through so fingers crossed we can enjoy some poolside fun.

Valentines Day

Who's surprised it took me this long to post what I did on Valentines day? Not me. It also won't surprise you that I didn't any pictures of myself, or with Matthew.

One of my co-workers, and friend, Charles, makes tons of yummy summertime food, including ribs. I ordered Matt and I a half-rack of ribs, made fresh steamed green beans, and homemade french fries. I also whipped up a batch of Martha Stewart's red velvet cupcakes.

As far as Valentines day gifts go Matt gave me the beautiful white tulips pictured above, a bag of Swedish fish, and a gamer tag for Xbox. I decided to go with - meow tacoz - if you play any games on Xbox you should add me, or friend me, or whatever you do on Xbox. (( n00b ))

Today I am home sick in bed. I've watch a million episodes of Brothers and Sisters, drank a bunch of hot chocolate, and filled a whole grocery bag with Kleenex.. Ew.

Quinoa - First Time For Everything

I am not a healthy food person. I am a rather picky eater who leans towards starches, cheese, pizza, and anything with frosting. So when the I first spotted Quinoa (pronounced keen-wa) on Danielle's blog (who's been eating Quinoa her whole life) I didn't even consider cooking it. Well then I started spotting it on more and more blogs. I'd guess it's become so popular because it's still early in the year and everyone is holding up on their NYE goals.. So I decided I'd give it a try, even though I never even started a healthy eating goal. I wanted to make it for Matt, who is also not a health food eater, more of a bacon-turkey-potato-chip-tarian, but still keeps his bean poll figure (unlike myself). I thought I would try Rebecca's recipe because it's something I'd eat even without the quinoa.

Well the good news is I LOVED it. The bad news is, Matt hated it. However; he hates tomatoes so pico = bad idea, and "can't eat too many eggs or it makes him sick" a.k.a. doesn't like those either. I am hoping to try another recipe with it and he will like it. He said it looks like spider eggs, but I pretty much hate anything with a weird texture/funny smell/gross look and I got past it. My parents, who I also made it for, loved it as well.

Winter in Iowa usually lacks fun things to do, especially when it throws you a blizzard. Then you realize that you don't have any craft supplies with you so it becomes even more uneventful. I'm sorry that wasn't very exciting. I have been working oodles and bunches the last couple days. Almost 10 hours yesterday. I have however saved up 1/12th of my 'Refill My Bank Account' Goal. When I graduated from high school my bank account had the most money I had ever seen, and now I have about 1/17th of that left. Pretty sad. So now that I am out of school I want to try and save up at least that much again. I work on Saturday and Sunday night before Valentines day and if I could get in another 1/12th of it 2 nights I'd be thrilled.

Well, I'm off to Nic's so she can, unfortunately, cover up my teal streaks. They aren't "work appropriate" and it just takes me far to long to hid them each day.

Well.. There it is. My very first plushie. I'm a nitpicker, but I'm ridiculously impatient, which is an awful combination. I can see every little thing wrong with it, but it just takes too long to make it all perfect. So, good enough! Oh, by the way, this little board is for a cutie in the making. I met Adam (Risse), and his girlfriend Kyra, through Matt. There little boy is due in April, and her shower is in a couple of weeks but I figured I'd make her gift ASAP or I'd never do it. I also want to get her a little something, any suggestions? I figured something mommy related, but something that makes life a little easier for her.

I'd just like to add that Katie over at Skunkboy Creatures, makes plushies full time. I'm in awe of her. I was struggling with one and she probably makes one a day!

Bowling Day

A couple weeks ago my one of my best friends, Ivy, was in town from Los Angeles. She's so much fun to be around, I must say I miss her a lot. Matt and I met her and her boyfriend, Andy, in Montezuma for some bowling and mexican food.

I am hoping that sometime in the future I will have saved enough money to go visit her and my family out in Cali. I haven't taken an awesome roadtrip since I went to Bonnaroo in 2008.

It was a pretty crazy trip, but there were some fun times and I saw a million bands that I probably would have never seen had a I not gone. Look how skinny I was!

Anyway, I don't have to work until 4:45 tonight so I decided to have a very productive day. And I have! Shockking!

The Boy

Today is the 'official' unofficial 365th with Matthew. We sort of just picked a random day, a great night we had together..

But let's be honest.. We knew when we eleventeen year olds that'd we'd end up together. Pretty cheesy, but I couldn't be more happy with how things have turned out.

2010 was wonderful, and I can't wait to share my future with Matt. He's basically the coolest person I know.

Tonight we ate at Popeye's (should have done this in our Halloween Costumes as Chicken and Louisiana Hot Sauce; their specialty)... This basically proves why we are our favorite couple ever. We didn't want to wait in line at the Olive Garden. I also decided since I'm a professional blog slacker, I should probably have my camera along with me. So Monday night we are 'celebrating' by me wearing a fancier than normal dress, taking pictures, and eating at the Olive Garden. I also want to go bowling.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Tomorrow I am crafting my very first plushie, a skateboard for my friend's soon-to-be baby boy! I also have a couple birthday cards to make. I will take some pictures to actually get another post up!

This Empty Northern Hemisphere

I haven't done a music post in a quite a while, so while Music Wednesday isn't too catchy, I'll give it a shot.

This morning I spotted one of my friends had posted a song. We have very similar taste in music so I gave it a listen. I was blown away. If I hear a song and immediately think of myself listening to it while riding my bike, or relaxing in the sun, I know I will love the whole album.

Geregory Alan Isakov is wonderful. I hope you enjoy his music as much as I do!

Today I take my final exam at Red Lobster. Then I am officially a Server, on my own! That means I finally get to keep my tips!

This was the first time I used both my tripod and remote. What an exciting, and chilling, adventure. I just went right out the back door, but it was still fun!

I haven't seen her since August, and I am thrilled. I will certainly take lots of photos to share!

Coral Sweater _ ReStyle Project Number One

I'm fairly happy with how my first ReStyle turned out. The sweater had a little whole in the back, and the flower on the collar was really fuzzy and yucky looking. I found a scrap of the fabric that the curtains in my old room were made out of and then just cut out flowers from it. I didn't get a picture of how I wore it, but I promise, it's adorable.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Pretty much didn't read the last page as I was shaking, sweating, and almost crying. Matt's mom wrote the card, which I plan to keep for life. We leave March 2nd and I could't be more excited. I already asked for it off work! So thanks to my second family, I couldn't be more appreciative that you're letting me join you on your wonderful family vacation.

I will hope to be back very soon with an outfit post. Matt gave me a tripod for Christmas, and my parents gave me a remote, so now I can take own pictures! Finally!

The Perfect Start

I started the New Year off with a killer headache, and major upset stomach. However, I received the best gift I could ever ask for (if you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you already know) but I will blog about that tomorrow.

Shark Week had a show that evening in Mason City. There were very few people there, but as always I had a great time with the guys. The bowling alley was a blast from the past, called The Rose Bowl. It has a really cool sign on the wall above the lanes with two roses in the middle. Unfortunately, they covered it up with an awful Monster sign. But the delicious onion rings made up for it!

I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful beginning to my year. I hope this is how the rest of my year goes! I start my job at Red Lobster as a server tomorrow. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about not going to school, and working a full-time job. I just keep trying to remember in August I will have moved out of my parents house and have a much better view of the future.

Welcoming the New Year

New Years Eve was spent playing Dance Central on Kaitlin's Kinect, taking too many pictures, singing the Star Spangled Banner, and drinking too much. It was a wonderful evening, and I was glad to have spent it with my friends.

After spending 2010 together I am so excited to enjoy 2011!

For Christmas Nic gave me a Best Friend necklace. It's a little carton of milk, and she has cookie!

Christmas celebration at my parents house. The pine outside my parents house covered with snow. My parents, Matt, and myself with our Christmas gifts.

Christmas at my Uncle John's. Traditional poor Italian dinner; polenta with chitte cutte, and sautisa.

(( you cut the polenta with a string. it's supposed to all come out of the pot but we got impatient and it stuck, oops. ))

The church where we went to Mass on Christmas Eve. It was so pretty inside, although the sermon was the same story as last year. Not exactly the best Christmas experience, but oh well.

After church we went the see the Italian Hall Disaster luminaries.

On December 24th, 1913, area copper miners had been on strike for 5 months. The miners were fighting for better pay, shortened work days, safer working conditions, and union recognition. That day, during a yuletide party for the striking miners and their families someone yelling "Fire!" Although there was no fire, seventy-three persons died while attempting to escape down a stairwell that had doors that opened inward. (( Have you ever noticed exit doors always open out? This event was a contributing factor as to why it is now a requirement for building codes. )) Over half of those who died were children between the ages of sex and ten. The perpetrator of the tragedy was never identified. The strike ended in April 1914. All that is left now of the Italian Hall is the doorway to the 3 story building.

On Christmas we went to my Grandma's retirement home for this super fancy, insanely delicious, dinner.

Again, just to prove how middle of the no where I am, the village of Mason has 3 phonebooths, and no cell phone service.

I still have Christmas with Matthew and his family. I am so excited! I gave Matt a PBR ad from the 1950's, but we still have a couple more gifts to exchange. I LOVE presents, and I am so anxious. We also still have a gingerbread house to decorate. I am headed back to Iowa tomorrow. We are going to watch Fubar.. I am either going to die from laughing, or be bored out of my mind and finish my scarf.

Unrelated Title; I Want A Moped

Anna said that this is my blog and I can say whatever I want. So I don't care if this isn't interesting, or it's depressing, or you don't read. With that being said.. Feel free to read, and say whatever you want :]

I am fairly confident that I not the only person who loves Christmas decorations, Christmas music, giving gifts, opening presents, eating a billion cookies, wearing "holiday" outfits, red, and green, and gold. I do occasionally think I am the only person who loves these things insane amounts, and then comes crashing down Christmas Eve Eve, Eve, and Day. I have this magical way of thinking about all the horrible things I can think of.

So here is an attempt to tell you those things, and then contradict myself about how it's not so bad, and I am actually grateful for everything I have.

What seems like a hundred years ago, my Dad was a firefighter. Sometimes he'd have to work on Christmas, and sometimes not, but we'd always go to my Grandma's. She lives waaay up north.

See the little pink part? Not the island but the little finger.. That's where she lives. 10 hour drive. I usually thought I was going to die.. children under 10, and 10 hour car rides, are not best friends. But when we'd get there my little Grammie would be waiting at her front door. There was always a thing on the door that had bells on it, and it would jingle when it opened and closed. She had tons of tins out in her entryway filled with cookies cause they didn't call fit in the kitchen. And her house always smelled the same.

We'd have Christmas at my Uncle John's on Christmas Eve. Then Christmas at my Grandma's on Christmas day. And then usually another Christmas at my Grandma's a couple days later. I think the point was so the adults didn't have to haul all the presents all over the place. In my mind (not sure if this really happened) all my cousins and I would play together. We'd color pictures and play with the vintage toys my Gram had. I'd drink apple juice, and eat ham and cheese.

At some point things got different. It was like, let's stop making an effort to have the same thing happen every year. Which is occasionally understandable, and sometimes people can't make it, and whatever. But it was more like, kids start growing up, you all feel award around each other, and no one knows what to buy each other for Christmas. Then it's just sort of done. It's like any other night. We all eat together, and then we just happen to open a couple presents. There is no tradition, not many Christmas songs, and now it's just a whatever cookie you'd like, not raisin tarts, or the white ones with the pink or green frosting and sugar sprinkles.

It's not as if I don't contribute to the Christmas downfall. I have missed Christmas', I have an attitude about sitting around, and I definitely feel awkward around the cousins.

Now my little Grammie is almost 90 years old. She asks the same question twice in the same minute. She can't remember where she's put things, or if she left candles burning. My cousin had a baby, so now my Uncle, Aunt, other cousin (brother), and his wife, are all at her house in Wisconsin. My other Uncle and his family are at home, which has been happening for a while. And so tonight, we went to Mass with my Grammie that asks a lot of questions. Then we took her back to her luxury retirement home thing, and my parents and I went out to dinner. After dinner we went to a memorial site where they had set up luminaries for people who died in massacre. I don't think I've ever been out to dinner on Christmas Eve. Tomorrow we are going to 'hangout' all morning, then go to my Grandma's to eat an amazing dinner at the luxury place, and then we are going to open a couple presents that my Uncle (the one at home) left for us. After that we will go back to my other Uncle's (the one who's in Wisconsin), which is where we are staying, and then go to sleep. In the morning, we will leave for good ole Iowa.

My Aunt on my Dad's side (all the previous people have been on my Mom's side) told me when she died I could have her mansion. It has a ballroom in the attic. The likelihood of this really happening is slim, but I don't care. When I get this mansion, and fix it all up, I will host the most magical Christmas ever. My whole family, all of them, will, no choice, come to my Christmas. They will leave their shoes and coats in the entry way, which has a window seat bench so you don't have to wobble around when you take off your boots. Everyone will mingle, and hum Christmas tunes, until the Christmas feast is ready. After a delicious meal we will open presents. Then we will all head up to the ballroom for dancing, and champagne, and coffee, and sweets. As everyone starts to get sleepy, some will head home, but the rest of us will go downstairs to watch a Christmas movie.

Doesn't that sound nice? I realize I'd have to have that mansion for the dancing, and getting everyone to come might be a bit of challenge. The feast and the movie will be highly likely. I am fully willing to make great efforts for that to happen. I just want tradition, and without dread. I want to look forward to the holidays, and enjoy them the whole way through. I want to learn to stop stressing about everything, and just enjoy things. I think I'll certainly have to do that before I can host a huge party. But I'll do it!

I am so grateful to have two wonderful parents, that make me laugh hysterically because they both hate when people don't just SING THE DAMN SONG! I love my little Grammie even though she asks the same question a million times. I also love my new cousin Patty, and everyone else in my family.

Tomorrow, or today, is Christmas, and even though it's not going to be traditional, I'm going to make every effort to turn off my cellphone, a just enjoy the 3 people in the world who really do love me the most. More than anyone ever will, and always will love me that much, if not more.

See that wasn't so bad.

The San Francisco Room

I'm not sure if any of you have relatives that live far far away.. but sometimes instead of being excited to see my family, I just dread being far far away. To top it off it's not as though my family lives someplace fun, like Chicago, or someplace warm, like Miami. Oh no, they live in the 3rd snowiest city in America, where I am confident the at least %50 of the population is over 50. It's a place with nothing to do, but snowy things, and I HATE snow. So sometimes, even though I really want to see my family, all I can think about is snow, and nothing to do. However, this year I am trying REALLY hard to not be a selfish brat, and actually enjoy myself and my family.

This morning when my Mom and I left for our second thrifting trip I saw a penny in the snow. I said to my Mom, "See a penny, pick it up! If it's heads-up you'll have good luck!" And sure enough it was heads up, and did I ever get some serious luck.

We went to Saint Vincent DePaul for the second time since we've been here. I found a good armload of things and headed up to cash register. The clerk asked me "Did you get this from downstairs?" I didn't even know there was a downstairs. She informed me that if I went all the way to the back there was a room they called The San Francisco Room that had tons of vintage in it. I pretty much ran downstairs. They didn't even have the lights on in the room. I could have spent the rest of the day in that room. But my little Grammie was getting worn out, so I had to hurry. Either way I made a killing, and I can't wait to return this summer.

I'm not feeling too bloggy lately, I wish I were. I just don't feel like what I have to say is all that interesting. I will try to blog more often, maybe as my one and only New Years goal?

Almost Christmas

I've been getting a lot done these things done.. Especially 'Relax' 'Enjoy' and 'Celebrate'! I am leaving for Michigan tomorrow so tonight we are having Christmas. This is my first "Christmas" with Matt and my parents.

I have lot's to update you all on, but I plan to do that tomorrow in the car. I'm hoping I get a little bit of money tonight so I can buy a wall-to-car charger converter thing... Otherwise I will get through maybe 1 post and computer will dieee. Perhaps I should save up for a new battery for my computer!

Back with a bazillion posts in the next couple days.

Isn't it just too badd..

That I have no money? Yes. I ate almost an entire block of cheese today because I have no other food. And now I don't even have a block of cheese. I am trying to eat all my food before I move so I just bring home sugar, flour, stuff like that. It's kind of gross though. How unhealthy can I get?

Nic and I are going all Jane Fonda on our asses when I get home next week. She's been cooking more at home and I plan to do the same. We are going to try and get some free gym action for a while. I have a sort of evil genius plan. I will let you know how it goes for us. I am pretty happy with my body, curves are my thing, and working out is not. However, I am so ready to tone up; read.. be able to open a jar of pickles, bottle of coke with my left hand, etc.

In other news, my babe got a job today! He's going to be a pizza delivery boy. I saw a movie when I was little in which the girlfriend of the pizza boy rode around with him while he worked. They listened to tapes, and she hung her feet out the window. I wonder if that's possible. It would even be a tape because that's how we listen to our ipods. I can dream...

It's "dead week," It's not dead at all. I had a math test, and written speech final yesterday, and a speech and a final on friday. However, I only have one final next week, and one test. Only one cumulative final! Thank goodness. I think I am going to do okay this semester. I wanted to do really well to prove to myself I could do well in school. Unfortunately the lack of a challenge made me do pretty average. It's very strange to think this COULD (Mom stop jumping to conclusions) be my last finals week ever. I could find a magical job that I love that does not require me to get my education via a typical institution. BUT more than likely I'm going to be getting my 2 year degree in August.

I am hosting a clothing swap next week. It's my first one and I really hope it's a great success. Just a small group of girls, baked goods, and some good tunes. I have dreams of hosting a much larger one in my community. Iowa City and Des Moines have them all the time, why not Cedar Falls? Have you ever been to a clothes swap? Do you have any tips for me, or the girls coming?

I Forgive Myself; being anxious, being whiney, being unmotivated, expecting more, doubting, trying too hard, caring too much, shit that happened when I was 15, not being able to get over the drama.

I Forgive Everyone; saying 'fag', being unmotivated, not understanding, not taking the time, not appreciating, being selfish, lack of respect.

I am ((not)) totally free.. but I can work on it. I have been. It's challenging to forgive when you doubt yourself. I need to work on me before I can get to other people. I think I project the issues I have with myself on to other people, which I know most people do. As I was writing that list I found myself repeating many of the "myself" to the "everyone".

I'm a marginally organized person. My stuff is mostly organized because I just recently moved and I couldn't wait to unpack. (( I can't believe I'm going to pack up all my stuff again tonight and tomorrow to move it all home on Sunday )) But I did have one basket full of stuff that was clearly too full, and I couldn't quite tell you exactly what was in it. Journals, magazines, cards, etc. So I decided to clean it out for Radvent.. I am so glad I did.

Yikes..

I watched Gypsy with Bette Midler while I cleaned. If you haven't seen it, you must! First I found $5.00 from my Grandma in Valentines day card from 2 years ago!

Then I found a $36.00 check that I got for sitting in a room waiting to see if I'd have to be a juror.

All organized! I didn't throw much away. But I found money, and got to look through all my Italy stuff. I am going to scrapbook my Italy adventure when I move home. I have a feeling it's going to be rather emotional, but I'm looking forward to it.

This weekend should be fun, but oh so busy. Hopefully tonight Matthew and Mitch are coming to spend the weekend with Jess and I. It's supposed to snow however, so driving 100+ miles might not be the best idea for them. I'm sure they will come on Saturday though! We are going to eat lots of yummy foods, hopefully find fun & FREE things to do, and party party party. As I said before I also have to pack all my stuff before Sunday. I also have tons of homework to do. But after this weekend I have nothing but exams, so life will be smooth sailing. I can't believe I'm going to be home a little over a week. It's a bummer that I just started hanging out with Jessica right as I am leaving.. But she's going to come see me, and I'm going to go see her, so it will be A-O-Kay! I can't wait for Christmas, New Years, Winter Solstice (?), etc.

RADVENT 2010 - 12/1: Remembering

Months and months ago I discovered Princess Lasertron on a bridal website. She makes beautiful bouquets (among other things) using felt, buttons, and tons of other pretty stuff. I instantly sent her a message telling her I hoped she continued to create beautiful pieces because the day I decide the colors for my wedding I am ordering all the pretty stuff she can make me. I later found out Meg and I (and now her sweet daughter, Alice) share the same birthday. It was meant to be!

Anyway, I've been following her on twitter for a while now and a couple days ago she asked if any follows would be interested in a blog writing challenge. As you know, I have been a less than frequent blogger, so I was certainly up for the challenge.

Here's the challenge;

So each day this December, to honor and respect the experiences from this year and re-examine my goals and hopes for the coming year, I am keeping a Radvent Journal! Every day I'll post a graphic and .pdf on princesslasertron.com, which starts with a theme word and journaling prompt, as well as things like inspirational quotes, photos, and a special project or two. I'll also share my own reflections and answers each day.

This is the first challenge;

To be honest I had to actually search around my Facebook, and an old blog, to figure out what I was doing. Isn't it just too bad that I can't even remember 5 years ago?

What were you doing five years ago today? I wish I could say exactly what I was doing. It was a Thursday, so I can assume I went to school. 2005 was a .. confusing year for myself. Looking back I wish someone had just slapped me across the face and said "HEY! STOP IT!" At the same time though, if I had been a better person, my boyfriend then, would have been who my boyfriend is right now. The likelihood of Matt and I still being together from the time I was 15 until now seems slim. So in the end I am thankful I did not chose to date him then. However, I do wish I made a lot of different choices in regards to both him, and all of my relationships at the time.
As the holiday day season began? Thanksgiving was spent with my family. My Aunt and Uncle came from Michigan and my Aunt sang at a cigar bar. Then I went and saw Saw 2 (Oh my gosh, they're on what, 7 now?) with my then best friend Erin. I was anxiously counting down the days until I left for California to play in a bowl game with the marching band, as well as going to Disney Land, and Sea World with a bunch of my friends!
Where were you? Who were you with? What did you want? What did you have? I remember we left on Christmas day evening, in 3 charter buses headed all the way to California. I spent the day with my family, playing Scrabble and cheating by using the dictionary. According to my late Xanga for Christmas I got;

sunglasses, belly button ring, the lady sovereign cd, the like cd, chanel chance purfume, 3 new pairs of jeans, a new skirt & shirt, new undiez!, a new scarf;2 hats;3pairz of gloves, suitcases, glow sticks..haha, a sweet little vintage purse, candy, THE SOUND OF MUSIC DVD!!!!!!!, moneyy$$, sockz, shoes (pumaz!!).

Clearly I was a spoiled little only child. However I follow up the post by talking about how thankful I was. I don't think I actually had any concept of how lucky I was. I still am one of the luckiest people ever. But it has only been in this last year that I am really starting to appreciate it. This might not have fully answered the question, but it's as close as I can get because I honestly just don't remember.

Looking at these pictures it's just so silly to think I thought I was "fat". I mean I honestly thought I was the chunkiest kid ever. I really had some serious self-esteem issues. The last pictures is Willa and I. I thought we'd be friends forever. I will never forget Willz. She was, and I'm sure still is, one of the sweetest people in the world. She went all over South America, and now goes to school out of state. Perhaps I will see her over the holiday as one of her best friends (I think they're still friends) is my neighbor and will be home. That would be such a holiday treat.

Thinking back to this time it's amazing how much I've changed, and how many things have changed, in the last 5 years. As I said before, I made my fair share of mistakes during this time in my life, but if I hadn't I might not be here today. I am so thankful for my sweet family, my wonderful boyfriend, and great friends. Especially during the holiday season, which is my favorite time of year. I move home in just a couple weeks and I can't wait to be closer to all these people.
