Sneak Peak

Thank goodness we got the air conditioner working today. The Iowa heat has officially set in. It reached 91 today, and of course, was humid as heck. I spent the day cleaning out my bedroom. Mom has informed me that she plans to turn my room into.. something other than my bedroom. So it's time for me to start packing up, throwing away, and finding new homes, for all my stuff. Oh boy, there is a lot of stuff. But by the end of the day I had received my first email from my Project Coordinator.

Is everyone ready for Camp A lingo? I'm hardly ready for it, but I guess I've got to get used to it. Audrey is my Project Coordinator, basically my manager. She will be at Camp with us (the Counselors) almost every day. The email she sent today was rather lengthy so I will spare you all the rules and regulations. The first, and most important detail, is the COSTUME CONTEST. If you're reading this, then you probably know I'm a costume queen. This major detail is going to kill my suitcase. How can I possible pack just one costume!? And how do you design a perfect costume when you don't know the theme, and it's going to be 90 some degrees?! I am pleased to say that this is easily my biggest worry. Flying, living with total strangers, being responsible for a bunch 6 years, total breeze. Costume contest, WORRY!

Moving on from that I learned a bit about where I will be working, and living. This is more than likely set in stone, but I am not getting my hopes up because things change, a lot, with Camp (I could even be switched to a new location AT THE AIRPORT). Beginning with where my Camp is located. The Day Camp in Naples is rather unique for Camp Adventure. Our site is located at Carney Park, meaning we are an all outdoor camp. Carney Park is located in a dormant volcanic crater. The park has a golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts, and oodles of hiking trails. Meaning, these are the activities that we will be doing with our campers (along with singing songs, and playing games). I couldn't be more excited.

As for our living quarters the email we received was a bit unclear but from what I understand we will be rotating. I am not looking forward to that as I'd rather just live in a shanty and make it my own, but hey, I'm living in Naples, can't complain. The first location is cabins that are located at Carney Park. They are double occupancy cabins equipped with a fridge, microwave, stove, and sink.. But no bathroom/shower.. Yikes. A stove, but not a toilet, that I do not understand. Biggest perk of living at Carney Park, SNORKELING! Yep, the most amazing thing I've ever done in my life, can be done where I am living. You can rent snorkeling gear and hit up the Sea for the afternoon. I know where all my money is going. The second location is the Hotel Premiere, which is located about 15 minutes from Carney Park. It's brand spankin' new. Again is a double occupancy room, but is just your regular old hotel room. When you stay here you get free continental breakfast, dinner for 5 euro every night, transportation to and from the train station, and free Wi-Fi in your room. Finally is the Capo Inn, which is located at the Naval base, about 30 minutes from Carney Park. These are single occupancy rooms, with a large fridge, and microwave, no Wi-Fi though. Because it's on the base you are in close proximity to the gym, theater, club (which I may or may not be able to get into as it's on the American military base), and the mini-mart. A bit more about the base, which will be accessible, for free, from any living location. As well as the previously mentioned, it has a Commissary (sort of like Wal-Mart), money exchange, post office, thrift store (double take, yeah, a thrift store), library, restaurants, and hospital.

This is getting a bit lengthy, but I am sure most of my posts will be. If you stick around to read the whole thing you're a real trooper. If you follow me the whole summer, I will take you out for ice cream as soon as I get home and you can tell me about your summer!

As well as the letter from PC Audrey, there was an attached letter from our Point of Contact, Cathy. Our Point of Contact is a person who lives, and works, on the military base year round. Basically she is the go to person for all things regarding things non-Camp related. In her letter she wrote;
"Naples is unique. You will find Naples to be similar in many ways to most any large metropolitan area. The people are generally friendly and curious; watching life’s rich pageant is a way of life. The food is great, but the traffic is something else. Additionally, there are numerous sights to see that are under an hour away to include: Mount Vesuvio, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and Capri, just to name a few. Naples is also central to the entire Mediterranean (and Europe), and public transportation is very convenient and affordable. I suggest that you seriously consider taking advantage of these opportunities while you’re here."
And then I did a little dance. She also mentions how the Italians dress "VERY FASHIONABLY" all the time. I've been warned by a friend that with my new found red hair I will stick out like a sore thumb. I'm sure my growing vintage dress collection (wallpaper print dresses) won't help. I am hoping my dear sweet friend Anna, at Small Town Fashion, can help me to find some suitable Italian wear for fancy nights out (some places don't let you in if you don't dress how they like. This is great news, and an awesome challenge, in my book).

Well that's certainly a lot of information packed into one post. I currently have no readers to let me know how I'm doing so far. I better send my link off to a few blogger friends before all of you non-blog readers start reading. I hope everyone enjoys my blog as much as I know I will. It's a great way to share my experience and keep in touch with all of you. For those of you who start reading before I leave I am now going to try and post a few more times before I leave. Goals, packing lists, sites to see, etc.

Who am I kidding, I have my hopes up! Oh well, I guess I can only hope for the best, and I am!

Until next time,
Counselor Hannah
